Baiba Skride is a Latvian violinist who has established herself as one of the leading classical musicians of her generation. Born on October 30, 1981, in Riga, Latvia, Skride began playing the violin at the age of four. Her parents, both professional musicians, recognized her talent early on and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Skride studied at the Emils Darzins Music School in Riga and later at the Conservatory of Music and Theatre in Rostock, Germany. She also attended masterclasses with renowned violinists such as Ruggiero Ricci and Ana Chumachenco. Skride's talent and dedication to her craft quickly became apparent, and she began to win awards and competitions. In 2001, Skride won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, one of the most prestigious violin competitions in the world. This victory launched her career and led to performances with major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Skride's repertoire is vast and includes works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich. In addition to her solo career, Skride is also a member of the Skride Quartet, which she founded with her sister, pianist Lauma Skride, in 2016. Skride has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2010, she was awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award, the highest honor in Latvian music.
