Born on 18th June 1953 in Manchester, England, Donohoe showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of three. He was a child prodigy and won his first competition at the age of twelve. Donohoe's musical education began at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied with Derek Wyndham and later with Sir George Thalben-Ball. He then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Professor Cyril Smith. Donohoe's talent was recognized early on, and he won several awards and scholarships during his time at these institutions. Donohoe's career as a professional pianist began in the early 1970s when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. This was a significant achievement for Donohoe, as he was the first British pianist to win this prestigious competition.
