She was a pianist, composer, and teacher who was known for her exceptional talent and virtuosity on the piano. Loriod was the youngest of three children and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a music teacher, and her mother was a singer. Loriod began playing the piano at a young age and showed great promise. She studied at the Paris Conservatory, where she was a student of Lazare Lévy and Nadia Boulanger. She won first prize in piano performance at the conservatory in 1947. Loriod also studied with Olivier Messiaen, who would later become her husband. Loriod and Messiaen met when she was a student at the conservatory. They began a romantic relationship and were married in 1961. Messiaen was a composer and pianist, and the two often performed together. They were known for their collaborations on Messiaen's compositions, particularly his piano works. Loriod's career as a pianist took off in the 1950s and 1960s. She performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, playing solo recitals and chamber music. She was particularly known for her performances of Messiaen's music, which she played with great sensitivity and understanding. Loriod also had a successful career as a composer. She wrote music for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Her compositions were often influenced by Messiaen's music, but she also had her own unique style. Loriod's music was characterized by its use of complex rhythms and harmonies. In addition to her performing and composing, Loriod was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Paris Conservatory and the École Normale de Musique de Paris. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists and composers. Loriod received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1953, she won the Prix de la Ville de Paris for her piano performance. She was also awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recording of Messiaen's Visions de l'Amen in 1957. In 1977, she was awarded the Légion d'honneur, one of France's highest honors. Loriod continued to perform and teach until her death on May 17, 2010, at the age of 86. She left behind a legacy as a talented pianist, composer, and teacher who made significant contributions to the world of classical music.More....
