GermanyBirth:1945Genre:ChoralOperaVocalSiegfried Lorenz was a renowned German baritone and classical music artist who was born on August 28, 1937, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Lorenz showed an early interest in music and began singing in the church choir at a young age. He received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, where he studied under the guidance of the famous baritone, Theo Adam. Lorenz made his professional debut in 1962 at the Berlin State Opera, where he performed the role of Papageno in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. Lorenz's career took off in the 1960s and 1970s, during which he performed in some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. One of Lorenz's most notable performances was his portrayal of the title role in Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" at the Bayreuth Festival in 1971. His performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it cemented his reputation as one of the leading baritones of his time. Lorenz went on to perform in many other Wagnerian operas, including "Tristan und Isolde," "Die Walküre," and "Parsifal." Lorenz was also known for his performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He was particularly renowned for his interpretation of Bach's cantatas, which he performed with great passion and precision. Lorenz's performances of Bach's music earned him numerous awards and accolades, including the prestigious Bach Medal in 1999. Throughout his career, Lorenz received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1975, he was awarded the National Prize of East Germany for his outstanding achievements in the field of music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin in 1987 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1997. Lorenz retired from performing in 2000, after a career that spanned nearly four decades. He continued to be involved in the music world, however, serving as a teacher and mentor to young singers. He also served as the president of the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart from 2000 to 2006. Siegfried Lorenz passed away on August 10, 2017, at the age of 79. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest baritones of his time, and his contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for generations to come.More....
