Gunther Herbig is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his exceptional talent and dedication. Born on March 23, 1942, in Dresden, Germany, Herbig showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the violin and then to the viola, which became his primary instrument. Herbig's musical journey began when he joined the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra as a violist in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the principal violist in 1964. During his time with the orchestra, Herbig also began conducting and was appointed as the assistant conductor in 1967. He continued to conduct and perform with the orchestra until 1972 when he left to pursue a career as a freelance conductor. Herbig's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 1977. He held this position until 1983 and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. During his time with the Staatskapelle Dresden, Herbig also conducted other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1984, Herbig was appointed as the music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1990. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 9. Herbig also introduced new works to the orchestra's repertoire and collaborated with renowned soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman. After leaving the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Herbig continued to conduct and perform with orchestras around the world. He has conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony, among others. Herbig has also conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to his work as a conductor, Herbig is also a respected teacher and has held positions at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Hartford. He has also conducted masterclasses around the world and has mentored numerous young musicians. Throughout his career, Herbig has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1988, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to music. He has also received the Smetana Medal from the Czech Republic, the Order of Merit from the state of Saxony, and the Order of Merit from the state of Michigan. His recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 9 with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989.
