He was born on June 14, 1747, in the town of Velvary, Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. Kozeluch was the son of a schoolteacher and showed an early aptitude for music. He began his musical education at the age of six, studying with his father and later with the local organist. In 1761, Kozeluch moved to Prague to study at the Jesuit college. He continued his musical education there, studying with the composer and organist Frantisek Xaver Brixi. Kozeluch quickly established himself as a talented musician and began composing his own music. In 1764, he was appointed organist at the Church of St. James in Prague, a position he held for the next 20 years. During this time, Kozeluch also began to establish himself as a composer. His early works were primarily vocal music, including masses, motets, and other sacred music. He also composed a number of instrumental works, including sonatas for keyboard and chamber music. In 1778, Kozeluch moved to Vienna, where he quickly became a prominent figure in the city's musical scene. He was appointed court composer to Emperor Joseph II and began to compose music for the court and for public performances. Kozeluch's music was well-received in Vienna, and he became known for his elegant and refined style. Kozeluch's output during his time in Vienna was prolific. He composed a wide range of music, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and operas. His music was characterized by its clarity and balance, with a focus on melody and harmony rather than virtuosity. One of Kozeluch's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F Major, which he composed in 1784. The concerto is notable for its lyrical melodies and elegant piano writing, and it remains a popular work in the classical repertoire. Kozeluch also composed a number of operas during his time in Vienna. His most famous opera is Il trionfo della costanza, which he composed in 1782. The opera was a critical and commercial success and was performed throughout Europe. In addition to his work as a composer, Kozeluch was also a respected music teacher. He taught piano and composition to a number of prominent musicians, including Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven studied with Kozeluch for a brief period in 1787, and the two composers remained in contact throughout their lives. Kozeluch continued to compose music throughout his life, and his output remained consistent in quality and style. He died on May 7, 1818, in Vienna, at the age of 70. Today, Kozeluch is remembered as one of the most important composers of the late 18th century, and his music continues to be performed and recorded around the world.More....
