The Linos-Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1977 in Germany. The ensemble is named after the Greek mythological figure Linus, who was known for his musical talents. The founding members of the ensemble were Hans-Peter und Marie-Luise Schmitz, who were both accomplished musicians in their own right. Hans-Peter Schmitz is a clarinetist who studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. He has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra. Marie-Luise Schmitz is a pianist who also studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and the United States. The Linos-Ensemble's repertoire includes works from the classical and contemporary periods, with a particular focus on chamber music. The ensemble has performed in numerous venues throughout Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The ensemble has also toured extensively in Asia and the United States. One of the highlights of the Linos-Ensemble's career was their performance at the 1988 Salzburg Festival. The ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Schumann, which was well-received by both audiences and critics. The ensemble has also performed at numerous other festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Rheingau Musik Festival. In addition to their performances, the Linos-Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1980, the ensemble won the first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Colmar, France. The ensemble has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Echo Klassik Award. The Linos-Ensemble has undergone some changes in its membership over the years, but has remained a highly respected and sought-after ensemble. The current members of the ensemble are Hans-Peter Schmitz (clarinet), Konrad Elser (violin), Matthias Buchholz (viola), and Vladimir Mendelssohn (cello). The Linos-Ensemble has also been committed to promoting the works of contemporary composers. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by numerous composers, including Wolfgang Rihm, Hans Werner Henze, and Jörg Widmann.
