Gothic Voices is a renowned classical music ensemble that specializes in performing medieval music. The group was founded in 1980 by the English musicologist and conductor Christopher Page, who remains its artistic director to this day. Over the years, Gothic Voices has become one of the most respected and influential ensembles in the field of early music, known for its innovative programming, impeccable musicianship, and commitment to historical authenticity. The founding of Gothic Voices was a response to a growing interest in medieval music in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Christopher Page, who had studied musicology at Oxford and had worked as a researcher at the British Library, was one of the leading figures in this movement. He had already published several books and articles on medieval music, and had worked with other early music ensembles such as the Early Music Consort of London and the Taverner Consort. However, he felt that there was a need for a new ensemble that would focus exclusively on the repertoire of the Middle Ages, and that would explore the rich and diverse musical traditions of this period in greater depth. To this end, Page assembled a group of talented singers who shared his passion for medieval music. The original members of Gothic Voices were Emily van Evera, Margaret Philpot, Leigh Nixon, and Rogers Covey-Crump, all of whom had extensive experience in early music performance. The ensemble's name was inspired by the Gothic architecture of medieval cathedrals, which Page felt was a fitting metaphor for the soaring, ethereal quality of the music they would be performing. Gothic Voices made its debut in 1981 with a concert at the Wigmore Hall in London, which was well received by critics and audiences alike. The ensemble's first recording, "A Feather on the Breath of God," was released the following year and became an instant classic. The album featured music by the 12th-century German abbess Hildegard von Bingen, and showcased the hauntingly beautiful vocal style that would become Gothic Voices' trademark. The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the ensemble as a major force in the early music world. Over the years, Gothic Voices has released more than 20 albums, each one exploring a different aspect of medieval music. The ensemble's repertoire ranges from the earliest surviving chant manuscripts to the complex polyphony of the 14th century, and includes music from all over Europe as well as the Middle East. Gothic Voices' recordings are known for their meticulous attention to detail, their sensitive interpretation of the music, and their use of period instruments and performance practices. Some of the highlights of Gothic Voices' career include their performances at major music festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The ensemble has also toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, and has collaborated with other leading early music ensembles such as the Hilliard Ensemble and the Orlando Consort. In addition, Gothic Voices has been featured on numerous radio and television programs, and has won several prestigious awards for its recordings, including the Gramophone Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. One of the most notable aspects of Gothic Voices' work is their commitment to historical authenticity.
