Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a British brass band that has been entertaining audiences with its unique sound for over a century. The band was founded in 1917 in the village of Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England, by a group of miners who wanted to form a brass band. The band was initially called the Grimethorpe Subscription Band, and it was made up of miners from the local colliery. Over the years, the band has undergone several name changes, including the Grimethorpe Colliery Silver Prize Band and the Grimethorpe Colliery Welfare Band. However, it is now known simply as the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The band has had many talented musicians over the years, but some of its most notable members include Frank Bryce, who was the band's conductor for over 30 years, and James Shepherd, who was the band's principal cornet player for many years. One of the band's most significant achievements was winning the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1972, 1973, and 1991. The band also won the European Brass Band Championships in 1978, 1979, 1989, and 1994. In addition to these major awards, the band has also performed at many prestigious events, including the Royal Variety Performance, the BBC Proms, and the World Cup opening ceremony in 1990. The band's performance of the hymn "Abide with Me" at the 1996 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium is also considered one of its most memorable performances. The band's unique sound is a result of its use of traditional brass band instruments, including cornets, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, and tubas. The band's repertoire includes a mix of classical music, traditional brass band music, and popular music. Despite the decline of the coal mining industry in the UK, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band has continued to thrive. The band has been featured in several films, including the 1996 film "Brassed Off," which tells the story of a fictional brass band in a mining community. The band's performance of the "William Tell Overture" in the film is one of its most iconic moments. Today, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band continues to perform and record music, and it remains one of the most respected brass bands in the world. The band's dedication to its craft and its unique sound have made it a beloved institution in the UK and beyond.
