He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a church organist and his mother a singer. Wilby began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and the organ. Wilby attended the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. He also studied at the University of York, where he earned a PhD in composition. Wilby's early works were influenced by the music of Benjamin Britten and Igor Stravinsky. His first major composition was his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1976 by the Halle Orchestra in Manchester.
