He was born on June 2, 1948, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Spanjaard was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Spanjaard studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he received his diploma in piano performance. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied conducting with Louis Stotijn. He also studied with Franco Ferrara in Italy and Sergiu Celibidache in Germany. In 1975, Spanjaard made his debut as a conductor with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra in 1979. He held this position until 1985, during which time he conducted numerous ballet productions, including works by Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. In 1985, Spanjaard was appointed as the principal conductor of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra in Maastricht, Netherlands. He held this position until 1995 and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. During this time, he also conducted other orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague. In 1995, Spanjaard was appointed as the principal conductor of the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra (now known as the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra). He held this position until 2005 and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. During this time, he also conducted other orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. Spanjaard has also been a guest conductor with numerous orchestras around the world, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has conducted numerous opera productions, including works by Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. In addition to his work as a conductor, Spanjaard is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has also performed as a chamber musician and has recorded numerous albums as a pianist. Throughout his career, Spanjaard has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music.
