Nieuw Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The ensemble was founded in 1976 by a group of young musicians who were interested in exploring contemporary classical music. The founding members of the ensemble were Jan Wolff, Joep Straesser, and Boudewijn Tarenskeen. The ensemble's main members have changed over the years, but it has always been composed of a group of highly skilled musicians who are dedicated to performing contemporary classical music. Some of the ensemble's most notable members have included flutist Harrie Starreveld, clarinetist Harry Sparnaay, and pianist Gerard Bouwhuis. Over the years, Nieuw Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals and venues. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances have included appearances at the Holland Festival, the Berliner Festspiele, and the Salzburg Festival. The ensemble has also performed at major venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Barbican Centre in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York. Nieuw Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1993, the ensemble was awarded the Dutch Music Prize, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a musician in the Netherlands. The ensemble has also won several Edison Awards, which are prestigious music awards in the Netherlands. One of the highlights of Nieuw Ensemble's career was its collaboration with composer Louis Andriessen. The ensemble has performed many of Andriessen's works, including De Staat, which is considered one of the composer's most important works. The ensemble's recording of De Staat was highly acclaimed and won an Edison Award. Another notable collaboration for Nieuw Ensemble was with composer Steve Reich. The ensemble performed Reich's work Music for 18 Musicians, which is considered one of the most important works of the minimalist movement. The ensemble's performance of the work was highly praised and was recorded for the Nonesuch label. Nieuw Ensemble has also been dedicated to commissioning and performing new works by contemporary composers. The ensemble has commissioned works by composers such as Kaija Saariaho, Michel van der Aa, and Richard Ayres. The ensemble has also performed works by other contemporary composers such as John Adams, György Ligeti, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In addition to its performances, Nieuw Ensemble has also been dedicated to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with young musicians and composers through its Nieuw Ensemble Academy, which provides training and mentorship to young musicians and composers. The ensemble has also worked with schools and community organizations to bring contemporary classical music to a wider audience. In recent years, Nieuw Ensemble has faced financial difficulties and has had to reduce its activities. However, the ensemble remains committed to performing contemporary classical music and continues to be a leading ensemble in the Netherlands and beyond.
