NetherlandsBirth:August 9, 1925 in Amsterdam, The NetherlandsPeriod:ContemporaryGenre:VocalRobert Heppener was a Dutch composer who was born on August 11, 1925, in Amsterdam. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. He began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father. He later studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he was a student of Ton de Leeuw and Henk Badings. Heppener's early works were influenced by the music of his teachers, as well as by the music of the Second Viennese School. He was also interested in the music of the French Impressionists, particularly Debussy and Ravel. Heppener's early works were characterized by their use of serial techniques and their exploration of timbre and texture. In the 1960s, Heppener began to move away from serialism and to explore new compositional techniques. He became interested in the music of the American minimalists, particularly Steve Reich and Philip Glass. He also began to incorporate elements of jazz and popular music into his compositions. One of Heppener's most important works is his opera "Het Laatste Uur" (The Last Hour), which was premiered in 1967. The opera is based on a play by Gerard van Klinkenberg and tells the story of a man who is about to be executed. The opera is notable for its use of electronic music and its exploration of the relationship between music and drama. Heppener's other notable works include his "Symphony No. 1" (1960), his "Concerto for Orchestra" (1963), and his "String Quartet No. 2" (1972). He also wrote a number of works for solo instruments, including his "Sonata for Flute and Piano" (1955) and his "Sonata for Cello and Piano" (1961). Heppener was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory from 1960 to 1985 and was a mentor to a number of young composers, including Louis Andriessen and Peter Schat. Heppener's music has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Sinfonietta. He received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Order of the Netherlands Lion and the Johan Wagenaar Prize. Heppener continued to compose until his death on July 25, 2009, at the age of 83. His music remains an important part of the Dutch classical music tradition and continues to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world.More....
