Emil Tabakov is a renowned Bulgarian conductor, composer, and double bass player. He was born on February 21, 1947, in Rousse, Bulgaria. Tabakov's father was a musician, and he grew up in a family that valued music. He started playing the double bass at the age of 10 and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Tabakov studied at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where he received a degree in double bass performance. He continued his studies in Vienna, where he studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky. Tabakov's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in 1976. During his tenure with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Tabakov gained international recognition for his exceptional conducting skills. He has also been awarded the Order of Stara Planina, the Order of Cyril and Methodius, and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Bulgaria. One of the highlights of Tabakov's career was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1997. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained international recognition for its exceptional performances and recordings. Tabakov conducted the orchestra on numerous tours throughout Europe and Asia, and he recorded extensively with the orchestra. In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Tabakov has also been a dedicated teacher. He has taught conducting at the State Academy of Music in Sofia and has mentored many young conductors throughout his career. Tabakov retired from his position as the principal conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2013. However, he continues to be active as a conductor and composer.
