He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Gert showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received his formal training in music. Gert Henning-Jensen's career as a classical music artist began in the 1960s when he started performing as a soloist with various orchestras in Denmark. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and was soon invited to perform in other countries. In 1965, he made his debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance was a major milestone in his career and helped to establish him as an international artist. Over the years, Gert Henning-Jensen performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. His performances were always highly acclaimed, and he was praised for his technical skill, musicality, and emotional depth. In 1972, he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, which is one of the most prestigious awards for classical musicians in Denmark. He was also awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, which is a Danish order of chivalry, in recognition of his contributions to Danish culture. Gert Henning-Jensen continued to perform and record music until his death on December 28, 1998, at the age of 61.
