He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Erich showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed a reputation as a gifted musician. Erich's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying at the Vienna Academy of Music at the age of 14 and quickly established himself as one of the most promising young musicians in Austria. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time, including Richard Hauser and Hans Swarowsky. In 1941, Erich was drafted into the German army and was sent to fight on the Eastern Front. He was captured by the Soviet army in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. During his time in captivity, Erich continued to play the piano and even gave concerts for his fellow prisoners. After the war, Erich returned to Vienna and resumed his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music. He graduated in 1948 and began his career as a concert pianist. He quickly established himself as one of the leading pianists of his generation and began performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe. Erich's career reached new heights in 1952 when he won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. The competition was one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world and winning it was a major achievement for any pianist. Erich's performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Following his victory at the Chopin Competition, Erich's career took off. He began performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also began recording extensively and released a number of critically acclaimed albums. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Erich was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Vienna Academy of Music for many years and was known for his dedication to his students.
