Born on August 20, 1909, in Vienna, Austria, Kunz was the son of a civil servant. He grew up in a musical family and showed an early interest in music. He began his musical training at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied under the guidance of the famous Austrian baritone, Richard Mayr. Kunz made his debut as a singer in 1930, at the Vienna State Opera, where he performed the role of the Count in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." He made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1942, where he performed the role of Papageno in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." He also performed at the Glyndebourne Festival in England, where he played the role of Figaro in "The Marriage of Figaro." Kunz's performances were highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.
