He was born in New York City in 1959 and grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a music teacher. Morelli started playing the clarinet at the age of nine and later switched to the bassoon. Morelli attended the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied with Harold Goltzer and Stephen Maxym. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1981 and a Master of Music degree in 1982. During his time at Juilliard, Morelli won the school's concerto competition and performed as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra. After graduating from Juilliard, Morelli joined the New York City Opera Orchestra as principal bassoonist. He held this position for ten years and also performed with other orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral work, Morelli has also been an active chamber musician. He has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Woodwind Quintet, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Morelli has also been a member of the woodwind quintet Windscape since 1994. Morelli has been a faculty member at the Juilliard School since 1987 and has also taught at the Manhattan School of Music and the Yale School of Music. He has given masterclasses and clinics at universities and conservatories around the world. Morelli has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1982, he won the International Double Reed Society's Young Artist Competition. He was also a finalist in the Naumburg Competition in 1983. In 1991, Morelli was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. Morelli has recorded extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. His recordings include works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky, among others. He has also recorded contemporary music, including works by Elliott Carter and John Harbison. One of Morelli's most notable performances was his solo performance of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the New York Philharmonic in 1991. The performance was highly praised by critics, and Morelli was hailed as one of the finest bassoonists of his generation.
