William Purvis is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music as a horn player, conductor, and educator. Born on August 22, 1951, in New York City, Purvis grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Purvis started playing the piano at the age of five and later switched to the horn when he was in high school. Purvis attended the Juilliard School, where he studied with horn virtuoso Myron Bloom. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1973 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at Yale University, where he studied with horn player and conductor Otto-Werner Mueller. Purvis also studied with renowned horn player Barry Tuckwell in London. Purvis began his professional career as a horn player with the American Symphony Orchestra in 1973. He later joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1977, where he played for 15 years. During his time at the Met, Purvis also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition to his work as a horn player, Purvis is also an accomplished conductor. He has conducted the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the New York Chamber Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic. Purvis has also served as the music director of the New York Youth Symphony and the Yale Symphony Orchestra. Purvis is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the Juilliard School, Yale University, and the Manhattan School of Music. He is currently a professor of horn at the Yale School of Music. Throughout his career, Purvis has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 1980, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which led to his debut recital at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. He was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1982. Purvis has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival. One of Purvis's most notable performances was his solo performance of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic in 1983. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Purvis's virtuosity and musicality. Purvis has also made numerous recordings throughout his career. He has recorded with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have been nominated for Grammy Awards. In addition to his work as a performer, conductor, and educator, Purvis is also a composer. He has written numerous works for horn, including a concerto for horn and orchestra, which was premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1996.
