He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Clabassi's father recognized his son's talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Clabassi began his musical training at the age of 14, studying at the Conservatory of Modena. He was a gifted student and quickly developed a reputation as a talented singer. After completing his studies, Clabassi made his professional debut in 1937, performing the role of Colline in Puccini's "La Bohème" at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Over the next few years, Clabassi continued to perform in various opera houses throughout Italy, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young bass-baritones in Italy. In 1942, Clabassi was drafted into the Italian army and served in North Africa during World War II. After the war, he returned to his singing career and continued to perform in Italy and abroad. In 1948, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, performing the role of Sparafucile in Verdi's "Rigoletto." Clabassi's international career took off in the 1950s, and he became a regular performer at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. He was particularly renowned for his performances in Verdi's operas, including "Don Carlo," "Aida," and "Otello." One of Clabassi's most memorable performances was in the title role of Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" at the Salzburg Festival in 1958. His powerful voice and commanding stage presence earned him critical acclaim, and the performance was widely regarded as one of the highlights of the festival. Clabassi also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1955, he was awarded the prestigious Viotti d'Oro prize for his performance in Verdi's "Don Carlo." He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960. Despite his success, Clabassi remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform well into his seventies, and his final performance was in 1990, at the age of 76, in a production of Verdi's "Nabucco" at the Teatro Regio di Parma.
