Born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1976, van Elsacker showed an early interest in music and began singing in his local church choir at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he received a degree in vocal performance. Van Elsacker's career began to take off in the early 2000s, when he began performing with some of the world's most prestigious opera companies. He made his debut with the Royal Opera House in London in 2002, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance was widely praised by critics, who noted van Elsacker's clear, powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. Over the next few years, van Elsacker continued to perform with the Royal Opera House, as well as with other major companies such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Paris Opera. He also began to make a name for himself as a soloist in oratorio, performing works by composers such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart. One of van Elsacker's most notable performances came in 2008, when he sang the role of the Evangelist in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. This performance was recorded and released on CD, and received widespread critical acclaim. Reviewers praised van Elsacker's "crystalline" voice and his ability to convey the drama and emotion of the piece. In addition to his work in opera and oratorio, van Elsacker has also performed in recital, both as a soloist and as part of a duo with pianist Jozef De Beenhouwer. Together, they have recorded several albums of lieder and art songs, including works by Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms. Van Elsacker has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de la Critique for his performance in the title role of Mozart's "Idomeneo" at the Paris Opera. He has also been awarded the Belgian Music Prize and the Flanders Opera Prize, among others.
