Parnassus ecclesiasticus, Op. 1 is a collection of sacred music composed by Herman Hollanders, a Flemish composer and organist. The collection was composed in the early 17th century, with the exact date of composition unknown. It was first published in Antwerp in 1628. The collection consists of 24 pieces, divided into three sections or movements. The first movement contains 10 motets, the second movement contains 8 psalms, and the third movement contains 6 hymns. The pieces are written for various vocal combinations, including solo voices, duets, trios, and four-part choir. The music in Parnassus ecclesiasticus is characterized by its use of polyphony, or the combination of multiple independent melodies. Hollanders employs a variety of compositional techniques, including imitative counterpoint, where one voice imitates another, and homophony, where all voices sing the same melody at the same time. The music is also notable for its use of chromaticism, or the use of notes outside of the diatonic scale, which adds a sense of tension and drama to the music. The collection was well-received upon its publication and was widely performed throughout Europe. It is considered an important example of Flemish sacred music from the early Baroque period.
