He quickly established himself as one of the leading clarinetists of his generation, and his performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. He also performed with other leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the English Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his work as a clarinetist, de Peyer was also a conductor. He founded the London Wind Soloists in 1958, which was a chamber ensemble made up of wind instruments. The group quickly gained a reputation for its innovative and exciting performances, and de Peyer's conducting skills were widely praised. De Peyer's career was marked by several notable performances and achievements. In 1959, he performed the world premiere of Benjamin Britten's "Movements for a Clarinet Concerto" with the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed the premiere of Malcolm Arnold's "Clarinet Concerto No. 2" with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1974. De Peyer was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of Mozart's clarinet concerto and Brahms' clarinet sonatas are considered to be some of the best ever made. He recorded extensively with the London Wind Soloists, and their recordings of Mozart's serenades for wind instruments are still highly regarded. De Peyer's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1976 and was awarded the Queen's Medal for Music in 2014.
