The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) is a classical music ensemble based in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1928, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the state, performing a wide range of classical and contemporary music to audiences across Western Australia and beyond. The orchestra was founded by a group of local musicians who were passionate about bringing classical music to the people of Western Australia. The first concert was held on 17 August 1928, and featured a program of works by Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances, and over the years has attracted some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists. Today, the WASO is led by Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser Asher Fisch, who has been with the orchestra since 2014. Fisch is a highly respected conductor who has worked with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. Under his leadership, the WASO has continued to grow and evolve, with a focus on bringing new and innovative programming to audiences across Western Australia. The orchestra is made up of around 80 full-time musicians, many of whom have been with the ensemble for many years. Some of the most prominent members of the orchestra include concertmaster Laurence Jackson, principal cellist Rod McGrath, and principal clarinet Allan Meyer. These musicians are all highly skilled and experienced performers, and have played a key role in the orchestra's success over the years. Over the years, the WASO has performed a wide range of classical and contemporary music, from the works of Mozart and Beethoven to more modern composers like John Adams and Arvo Pärt. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of other artists and ensembles, including the Australian Ballet, the West Australian Opera, and the Perth International Arts Festival. One of the highlights of the WASO's history was the orchestra's performance at the opening ceremony of the 1987 America's Cup in Perth. The orchestra performed a specially commissioned work by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The performance was a huge success, and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra both in Australia and internationally. In recent years, the WASO has continued to receive critical acclaim for its performances and recordings. The orchestra has won numerous awards, including the 2018 Helpmann Award for Best Symphony Orchestra Concert for its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 3. The orchestra has also released a number of highly acclaimed recordings, including a series of Beethoven symphonies conducted by Asher Fisch. Overall, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra is a highly respected and influential classical music ensemble that has played a key role in the cultural life of Western Australia for over 90 years. With its talented musicians, innovative programming, and commitment to excellence, the orchestra is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.
