Period:RomanticGenre:OperaGiovanni Zenatello was an Italian tenor and opera singer who was born on January 22, 1876, in Verona, Italy. He was the son of a shoemaker and grew up in a working-class family. Zenatello showed an early interest in music and began singing in the choir of his local church. He later studied at the Verona Conservatory, where he received vocal training and learned to play the piano. Zenatello made his professional debut in 1900 at the Teatro Verdi in Padua, Italy, in the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented tenor and was soon performing in major opera houses throughout Italy. In 1903, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Over the next few years, Zenatello continued to perform in Italy and also began to make a name for himself internationally. In 1907, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, where he received critical acclaim for his performance in Verdi's Otello. He also performed in Paris, Vienna, and other major European cities. In 1910, Zenatello made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike. He performed in a wide range of operas, including Verdi's Aida, Rigoletto, and Il Trovatore, as well as Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca. He also performed in the world premiere of Giacomo Puccini's La Fanciulla del West in 1910. One of Zenatello's most famous performances was in the role of Romeo in Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, which he performed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1912. His performance was so well-received that he was invited to perform the role at the Paris Opera the following year. Zenatello continued to perform at the Metropolitan Opera for many years, and he also made several appearances at the Chicago Opera and the San Francisco Opera. He was known for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. In addition to his work as an opera singer, Zenatello was also a successful concert performer. He gave recitals throughout Europe and the United States, and he was known for his interpretations of Italian art songs and arias. Throughout his career, Zenatello received many honors and awards. In 1913, he was awarded the title of Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the British Empire in 1924. Zenatello retired from performing in 1936, but he continued to be involved in the world of opera. He served as the director of the Verona Arena, a famous open-air opera house in his hometown, from 1936 to 1943. He also taught voice at the Milan Conservatory and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Giovanni Zenatello died on February 11, 1949, at the age of 73.
