Donald Hunt was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music. He was born on September 21, 1930, in London, England. Hunt's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the organ. Hunt's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a skilled musician. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of Harold Darke and G.D. Cunningham. Hunt's studies at the academy helped him develop his skills as a musician and composer. After completing his studies, Hunt began his career as a musician. He worked as an organist and choirmaster at various churches in London, including St. Mary's Church in Hendon and St. John's Church in Hampstead. Hunt's work as a church musician helped him develop his skills as a conductor and composer. In 1961, Hunt was appointed as the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for six years and helped the orchestra gain recognition as one of the leading orchestras in the UK. During his tenure, Hunt conducted many notable performances, including the UK premiere of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13. In 1967, Hunt was appointed as the conductor of the Lichfield Festival. He held this position for 28 years and helped the festival become one of the most prestigious music festivals in the UK. Hunt's work at the festival included conducting many notable performances, including the world premiere of John Joubert's opera "Silas Marner." Hunt was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by many leading orchestras and choirs. His compositions included works for orchestra, choir, and organ. Some of his most notable works include "The Glory of the Lord," "The Lord is My Shepherd," and "The Holy Child." Throughout his career, Hunt received many awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1989, he was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. In 1994, he was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Arts. In 2000, he was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music by the University of Birmingham. Hunt continued to work as a musician and conductor until his retirement in 2002. He passed away on June 18, 2018, at the age of 87.
