He was the son of a Presbyterian minister, and his family was deeply religious. Kirkpatrick's father was also a musician, and he taught his son to play the piano and organ from a young age. Kirkpatrick's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he began composing music when he was just a teenager. He attended the Normal Musical Institute in Geneseo, New York, where he studied music theory and composition. After completing his studies, Kirkpatrick became a music teacher and organist at various churches in Pennsylvania. Kirkpatrick's first major success as a composer came in 1865 when he wrote the music for the hymn "Jesus Saves." The hymn became incredibly popular and was sung in churches across the country. Kirkpatrick continued to compose religious music throughout his career, and many of his hymns are still sung today. One of Kirkpatrick's most famous works is the hymn "Away in a Manger."
