He was born on September 10, 1941, in Nottingham, England, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a choirmaster, and his mother was a singer. Hogwood showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Hogwood attended Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied music and classics. He was a gifted harpsichordist and became a founding member of the Early Music Consort of London in 1967. The group specialized in performing music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods on period instruments, which were replicas of the instruments used during those times. In 1973, Hogwood founded the Academy of Ancient Music, which became one of the most prominent period-instrument orchestras in the world. The orchestra's mission was to perform music from the Baroque and Classical periods on instruments that were similar to those used during those times. Hogwood was the conductor and artistic director of the orchestra for over 30 years, and during that time, he led the ensemble in numerous recordings and performances. Hogwood was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to historical accuracy. He was a pioneer in the field of historically informed performance, which involved using period instruments and playing styles to recreate the sound of music from earlier periods. He was also a respected musicologist and wrote several books on music history and performance practice. Hogwood's career was marked by numerous highlights and achievements. In 1981, he conducted the first performance of Handel's opera "Tamerlano" in modern times, using period instruments and performing practices. The performance was a critical and commercial success and helped to establish Hogwood's reputation as a leading figure in the early music movement. Hogwood also conducted many other notable performances, including the first complete recording of Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" on period instruments and the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on period instruments. He was also a frequent guest conductor with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a conductor, Hogwood was also a respected harpsichordist and performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. He recorded numerous albums of solo harpsichord music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti. Hogwood's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1989, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the Queen in 2010, which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a British citizen. Hogwood continued to perform and conduct until his death on September 24, 2014, at the age of 73. His legacy lives on through his recordings, writings, and the many musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career. He will be remembered as a pioneer in the field of historically informed performance and a champion of the music of the Baroque and Classical periods.More....
