Born on July 1, 1938, in Ghent, Belgium, Boeykens showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of nine. He received his formal training at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where he studied under the guidance of Prosper De Troyer. Boeykens' talent and dedication to his craft quickly became apparent, and he began to make a name for himself in the classical music world. In 1964, he won first prize at the International Competition for Wind Instruments in Munich, Germany, which helped to launch his career as a soloist and chamber musician. Throughout his career, Boeykens performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, and Herbert von Karajan. One of Boeykens' most significant contributions to the world of classical music was his work as a chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Belgian Clarinet Quartet, which was formed in 1969 and quickly gained international acclaim for its innovative and virtuosic performances. Boeykens also founded the Walter Boeykens Ensemble, which specialized in performing contemporary music and premiered many new works by leading composers. In addition to his work as a performer, Boeykens was also a respected teacher and mentor. He held teaching positions at several prestigious institutions, including the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and the Rotterdam Conservatory. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as professional musicians. Boeykens' contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the title of "Cultural Ambassador of Flanders" by the Flemish government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Order of Leopold II, one of Belgium's highest honors, in 2003. Boeykens continued to perform and teach until his death on September 9, 2013, at the age of 75.
