Ensemble Walter Boeykens is a renowned classical music ensemble that was founded in 1976 by Belgian clarinetist Walter Boeykens. The ensemble has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances and recordings of chamber music, particularly for its interpretations of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven. Walter Boeykens, the founder of the ensemble, was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1938. He began playing the clarinet at a young age and went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Boeykens quickly established himself as a talented musician and was appointed principal clarinetist of the Belgian National Orchestra at the age of 21. He later became a professor of clarinet at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he taught for over 30 years. In 1976, Boeykens founded Ensemble Walter Boeykens with the goal of creating a chamber music ensemble that would showcase the talents of some of the finest musicians in Belgium. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances and recordings, and it has since become one of the most respected chamber music ensembles in the world. The ensemble's main members have included Walter Boeykens on clarinet, Marc Grauwels on flute, and Robert Groslot on piano. Other members have included violinists Guido De Neve and Koenraad Hofman, violist Tony Nys, cellist Luc Tooten, and bassoonist Danny Bond. Ensemble Walter Boeykens has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals in the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Gidon Kremer, and cellist Mischa Maisky. One of the highlights of the ensemble's career was its performance at the 1986 Edinburgh Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its interpretation of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet. The ensemble's recording of the piece, which was released in 1987, has since become a classic and is considered one of the definitive recordings of the work. Ensemble Walter Boeykens has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its career. In 1988, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Prix Caecilia for its recording of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet. The ensemble has also been awarded the Belgian Music Prize and the Fuga Trophy, among others. Despite the passing of Walter Boeykens in 2013, the ensemble continues to perform and record to this day.
