He quickly gained a reputation as a talented tenor, and he was soon performing in operas and concerts throughout South Africa. In 1987, van der Walt made his international debut at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, where he performed in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance was a major milestone in van der Walt's career, and it helped to establish him as a rising star in the world of classical music. Over the next few years, van der Walt continued to perform in operas and concerts throughout Europe and the United States.
