The opera was composed in 1825 and premiered on April 12, 1826, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. The libretto was written by James Robinson Planché, based on a German poem by Christoph Martin Wieland. The plot of Oberon revolves around the fairy king Oberon, who is in search of a mortal bride. He sends his servant, Puck, to find a suitable candidate, and Puck brings back the knight Sir Huon of Bordeaux. Sir Huon is in love with Reiza, the daughter of the Caliph of Baghdad, but he is forced to flee after killing the Caliph's son in a duel. Oberon promises to help Sir Huon win Reiza's hand if he completes a series of tasks, including stealing a magic horn from the Caliph's treasury. The opera is known for its use of supernatural elements, including fairies, magic spells, and enchanted forests. The music is characterized by its use of folk melodies and dance rhythms, as well as its innovative orchestration. The overture, which features a prominent horn solo, is one of Weber's most famous compositions. Oberon is divided into three acts, each with its own set of musical movements. Act I includes an overture, an opening chorus, and several arias and duets. Act II features a ballet sequence, as well as a series of recitatives and arias. Act III includes a grand finale, as well as a duet between Sir Huon and Reiza. Overall, Oberon is considered one of Weber's most important works, and it has had a lasting impact on the operatic repertoire. Its use of supernatural elements and innovative orchestration have influenced many composers, including Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz.More....
