Born on July 23, 1928, in Lisbon, Portugal, Almeida was raised in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Almeida showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano and violin. Almeida's musical education began at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, where he studied composition, conducting, and piano. He later continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Nadia Boulanger, a renowned music teacher who had taught some of the greatest composers of the 20th century, including Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Quincy Jones. After completing his studies, Almeida began his career as a conductor, making his debut in 1950 with the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was invited to conduct orchestras in France, Italy, and Spain. In 1956, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Portuguese National Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for six years. In 1962, Almeida moved to the United States, where he became the music director of the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in the country, earning critical acclaim for his performances of works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms. Almeida's career continued to flourish, and he was invited to conduct some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also conducted numerous opera productions, including performances at the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Throughout his career, Almeida was known for his passion for music and his dedication to preserving the works of lesser-known composers. He was particularly interested in the music of French composers, and he conducted many performances of works by composers such as Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Ravel, and Claude Debussy. In addition to his work as a conductor, Almeida was also a respected musicologist. He wrote extensively on the music of French composers, and his book, "The French Symphony at the Fin de Siècle," is considered a seminal work on the subject. Almeida's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1988, he was awarded the Order of Saint James of the Sword, one of Portugal's highest honors. He was also made an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 1991.
