Role:ComposerBirth:January 22, 1870Death:November 4, 1939Period:RomanticGenre:KeyboardCharles Tournemire was a French composer, organist, and music teacher who lived from 22 January 1870 to 3 November 1939. He was born in Bordeaux, France, to a family of musicians. His father, Célestin Tournemire, was an organist and composer, and his mother, Adèle, was a pianist. Charles showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano and organ at a young age. Tournemire's musical education began at the Bordeaux Conservatory, where he studied piano with Antoine Marmontel and organ with Alexandre Guilmant. He later continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Charles-Marie Widor and organ with Louis Vierne. Tournemire was a gifted student and won several prizes during his time at the conservatory. After completing his studies, Tournemire began a career as a church organist. He held positions at several churches in Paris, including the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur and the Church of Sainte-Clotilde. Tournemire was known for his improvisational skills and often incorporated improvisation into his performances. Tournemire's compositions were heavily influenced by his Catholic faith. He wrote several works for the church, including Masses, motets, and hymns. His most famous work is the cycle of organ pieces titled "L'Orgue Mystique," which consists of 51 sets of pieces for the liturgical year. The cycle was written between 1927 and 1932 and is considered one of the most significant works of French organ music of the 20th century. In addition to his church music, Tournemire also wrote several works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, and solo piano. His orchestral works include a symphony, a suite for orchestra, and several tone poems. His chamber music includes a string quartet, a piano trio, and a sonata for violin and piano. Tournemire's piano music includes several sets of preludes and fugues, as well as a set of variations on a theme by Beethoven. Tournemire was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where his students included Olivier Messiaen and Maurice Duruflé. Tournemire was known for his strict teaching style and his emphasis on improvisation and counterpoint. Tournemire's life was not without its challenges. He suffered from poor health throughout his life and was often forced to cancel performances and engagements. He also struggled with financial difficulties, and his music was not always well-received by critics and audiences. Despite these challenges, Tournemire's music has endured and continues to be performed and recorded today. His contributions to French organ music and his influence on his students have earned him a place in the pantheon of great French composers.More....
