Jindrich Feld was a Czech composer who was born on February 19, 1925, in Prague. He was the son of a Jewish family, and his father was a businessman. Feld showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied composition at the Prague Conservatory with Pavel Bořkovec and Alois Hába. During World War II, Feld was forced to flee Prague due to the Nazi occupation. He spent time in various parts of Europe, including Switzerland and Italy, before eventually settling in Israel in 1948. While in Israel, Feld worked as a music teacher and conductor, and he also continued to compose. Feld's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his teachers, Bořkovec and Hába, who were both proponents of microtonal music. However, Feld later moved away from microtonality and began to incorporate more traditional tonal elements into his compositions. One of Feld's most notable works is his Symphony No. 2, which was composed in 1955. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that reflects Feld's experiences during World War II. It is characterized by its use of dissonance and its dramatic shifts in mood and tempo. Feld's other notable works include his Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, which was composed in 1979. The concerto is a virtuosic work that showcases the viola's range and expressive capabilities. Another notable work is his String Quartet No. 7, which was composed in 1983. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that explores the possibilities of the string quartet form. Throughout his career, Feld received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. He was awarded the Czech State Prize for Music in 1977, and he was also a recipient of the Israeli Prize for Music in 1990. In addition to his work as a composer, Feld was also a respected music educator and served as a professor at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Feld passed away on August 3, 2007, in Prague. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to be celebrated by musicians and music lovers around the world.
