Born on August 2, 1948, in Lille, France, Swierczewski showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won several awards and prizes for his exceptional talent. Swierczewski began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles in France and abroad. He was a member of the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France before he decided to focus on conducting. In 1980, he founded the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie, which he led for over a decade, establishing it as one of the leading orchestras in France. Swierczewski has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated soloists of our time, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Maxim Vengerov. One of Swierczewski's most significant achievements was his appointment as the music director of the Orchestre National de Lille in 1994. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained international recognition for its innovative programming and high artistic standards. Swierczewski's tenure with the orchestra lasted for over a decade, during which he conducted numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms. Swierczewski has also been a champion of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering works by some of the most prominent composers of our time, such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Henri Dutilleux, and György Ligeti. He has recorded extensively, with over 100 albums to his credit, including many award-winning recordings. Throughout his career, Swierczewski has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1999, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite by the French government for his services to music. He has also been awarded the Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros, the Grand Prix du Disque, and the Diapason d'Or, among others.
