James Jr. quickly developed a passion for music, and he spent most of his childhood practicing and perfecting his skills. In 1954, James Jr. graduated from Little Rock Central High School, where he was a member of the school's band and orchestra. He then went on to attend the University of Arkansas, where he studied music theory and composition. During his time at the university, James Jr. was a member of the school's marching band and symphony orchestra. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, James Jr. moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He started performing in various venues around the city, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist. In 1960, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall, where he performed a solo recital that received critical acclaim.
