Born on October 22, 1945, in Odessa, Ukraine, Maisenberg showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later studied at the Odessa Conservatory, where he was mentored by the renowned pianist Emil Gilels. In 1965, Maisenberg won first prize at the International Schumann Competition in Zwickau, Germany, which marked the beginning of his international career.
