Born on October 4, 1973, in Moscow, Russia, Melnikov showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov, a renowned pianist and teacher, and later with Sergei Dorensky. Melnikov's talent was recognized early on, and he won several prestigious competitions, including the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, Germany, in 1991, and the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, in 1993. These victories helped launch his career as a soloist, and he quickly gained a reputation as a pianist of exceptional skill and sensitivity. Melnikov's repertoire is wide-ranging, but he is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Shostakovich. He has recorded several albums of Bach's keyboard works, including the Goldberg Variations, the Partitas, and the Well-Tempered Clavier. His performances of these works are marked by their clarity, precision, and emotional depth. In addition to his solo work, Melnikov is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, violinist Isabelle Faust, and clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer. Together, they have performed and recorded works by composers such as Schubert, Brahms, and Shostakovich. One of Melnikov's most notable performances was his 2010 debut at the BBC Proms, where he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The performance was widely praised for its energy, passion, and technical brilliance. Melnikov has also performed with many other leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Melnikov has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for his recording of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues. He has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Edison Award for his recordings. Despite his many accomplishments, Melnikov remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and record regularly, always striving to deepen his understanding of the music he plays and to share his passion with audiences around the world.More....
