Born on October 4, 1973, in Moscow, Russia, Melnikov showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov, a renowned pianist and teacher, and later with Sergei Dorensky. Melnikov's talent was recognized early on, and he won several prestigious competitions, including the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau, Germany, in 1991, and the International Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, in 1993.
