Born on June 8, 1949, in Lviv, Ukraine, Ax grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they both encouraged their son to pursue a career in music. At the age of six, Ax and his family moved to Warsaw, Poland, where he began taking piano lessons with Mieczyslaw Munz. Munz recognized Ax's talent early on and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. In 1961, when Ax was 12 years old, his family immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, where he continued his piano studies with Zara Nelsova. Ax's talent continued to blossom, and in 1963, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which launched his career as a professional pianist. He went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Mieczyslaw Horszowski and earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1970. Ax's career took off in the 1970s, and he quickly established himself as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1973, and he has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Ax's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Brahms, and he has recorded all of Brahms's piano concertos with the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi. Ax has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1987, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been awarded the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance three times, and he was awarded the Glenn Gould Prize in 2012. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Ax is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Isaac Stern. He is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and he has performed at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. Ax is also a dedicated teacher, and he has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Mannes School of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.
