Robert Plane is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on 22nd May 1966 in Swansea, Wales. From a young age, Plane showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. He began playing the clarinet at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Plane's musical education began at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied under the tutelage of Anthony Pay. He then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Queen's Commendation for Excellence. During his time at the Royal Academy, Plane was a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, one of the world's most renowned chamber orchestras. After completing his studies, Plane began his professional career as a freelance musician, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile clarinetist, and his career began to take off. In 1992, he was appointed principal clarinet of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for ten years. During his time with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Plane performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Musikverein in Vienna. He also recorded several albums with the orchestra, including a critically acclaimed recording of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. In 2002, Plane left the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to pursue a solo career. Since then, he has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He has also performed at many of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of Plane's career was his performance of the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in 2005. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it received widespread critical acclaim. The Guardian described Plane's performance as "a revelation," while Gramophone magazine praised his "dazzling virtuosity." In addition to his work as a soloist, Plane is also a dedicated chamber musician. He is a founding member of the Gould Piano Trio, one of the world's leading piano trios. The trio has performed at many of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. They have also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete Beethoven piano trios. Plane's dedication to music has been recognized with several awards and honors. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by a solo instrumentalist. He was also awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2012. In addition to his performing career, Plane is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at several music schools and conservatories, including the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is currently a professor of clarinet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
