She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a violinist. Claire showed an early interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. However, it was not until she was a teenager that she discovered her true passion for singing. Claire attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied music and voice. She also studied with renowned vocal coach Lotte Lehmann, who helped her develop her vocal technique and style. After completing her studies, Claire began performing in local opera productions and quickly gained a reputation as a talented soprano. In 1952, Claire made her professional debut with the San Francisco Opera, where she performed the role of Micaela in Bizet's Carmen. Her performance was well-received, and she was soon offered a contract with the company. Over the next few years, Claire performed in a number of productions with the San Francisco Opera, including La Bohème, Don Giovanni, and The Marriage of Figaro. In 1955, Claire made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where she performed the role of Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni. Her performance was a huge success, and she quickly became a favorite among audiences and critics alike. Over the next few years, Claire performed in a number of productions at the Metropolitan Opera, including La Traviata, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. In addition to her work with the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, Claire also performed with a number of other opera companies around the world. She performed with the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera, among others. Her performances were always well-received, and she was known for her powerful voice and emotional performances. In 1964, she was awarded the National Opera Institute Award for her contributions to the field of opera. Despite her success, Claire's career was not without its challenges. In 1965, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was forced to take a break from performing while she underwent treatment. However, she was able to make a full recovery and returned to the stage in 1966. In the late 1960s, Claire began to transition from opera to concert performances. She performed with a number of orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Her performances were always well-received, and she was known for her ability to bring emotion and depth to her interpretations of classical music. Claire continued to perform well into the 1980s, but she eventually retired from the stage in 1985. She spent her later years teaching voice and mentoring young singers.
