Franz Schubert's Impromptus (4) for piano, D. 899, Op. 90, were composed in 1827, just a year before his untimely death at the age of 31. The work was premiered posthumously in 1839 by the pianist Franz Liszt, who was a great admirer of Schubert's music. The Impromptus consist of four movements, each with its own distinct character and mood. The first, in C minor, is marked Allegro molto moderato and has a melancholy, introspective quality. The second, in E-flat major, is marked Allegro and is more lively and playful, with a dance-like rhythm. The third, in G-flat major, is marked Andante and is the most famous of the four, with its hauntingly beautiful melody and delicate, ethereal texture. The final movement, in A-flat major, is marked Allegretto and has a joyful, exuberant character, with a lively, syncopated rhythm. Schubert's Impromptus are characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and expressive use of the piano's range and timbre. They are also notable for their use of variation form, in which a basic theme is presented and then developed and transformed throughout the course of the movement. This gives the Impromptus a sense of unity and coherence, while also allowing for a wide range of emotional expression and musical ideas. Overall, Schubert's Impromptus are a testament to his genius as a composer and his ability to create music of great beauty and depth. They remain popular and beloved works in the piano repertoire, and continue to inspire and move audiences today.
