She began playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Her parents recognized her potential and enrolled her in the Tbilisi Central Music School, where she studied under the tutelage of Alexander Satz. In 1964, Leonskaja moved to Moscow to continue her studies at the Moscow Conservatory. She studied under the guidance of Yakov Flier, a renowned pianist and teacher. During her time at the conservatory, Leonskaja won several awards, including the first prize at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1968. Leonskaja's career took off in the 1970s when she began performing internationally. She made her debut in the United States in 1979, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Seiji Ozawa. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. Throughout her career, Leonskaja has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Herbert von Karajan, and Riccardo Muti. Leonskaja's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Mozart, and Schubert. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Schubert, and her recordings of his piano sonatas are considered some of the best in the world.
