Cyprien Katsaris is a world-renowned classical pianist and composer, born on May 5, 1951, in Marseille, France. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. Katsaris began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from a young age. At the age of 13, Katsaris won first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under Aline van Barentzen. He continued his studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, under the tutelage of Karl-Heinz Kämmerling. Katsaris also studied with Maria Tipo and Tatiana Nikolayeva. Katsaris made his debut at the age of 17, performing with the Orchestre de Paris under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and unique interpretations of classical works. Katsaris has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Katsaris has also won numerous awards throughout his career, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d'Or, and the Edison Award. He was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1988. In addition to his performances as a pianist, Katsaris is also a composer. He has written works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions have been performed by many leading musicians and orchestras around the world. One of Katsaris's most notable performances was his interpretation of Franz Liszt's Transcendental Etudes. He recorded the complete set of etudes in 1986, which was hailed as a landmark recording and earned him critical acclaim.
