Recitativo and Scherzo-Caprice, Op. 6 is a violin solo piece composed by Fritz Kreisler in 1904. It was premiered by the composer himself in Berlin on November 17, 1904. The piece consists of two contrasting movements, the first being a recitative and the second a scherzo-caprice. The recitative is marked "Lento con espressione" and begins with a slow, mournful melody played in a free, improvisatory style. The violinist is given a great deal of freedom in interpreting the music, with Kreisler indicating only the basic rhythm and pitch of the notes. The music gradually builds in intensity, with the violinist using a variety of techniques such as double stops, harmonics, and glissandi to create a sense of drama and tension. The second movement, marked "Allegro molto con grazia," is a lively and playful scherzo. The music is characterized by its rapid, virtuosic passages and its use of pizzicato and spiccato bowing techniques. The scherzo is interrupted by a slower, more lyrical section in the middle, before returning to the fast and energetic main theme. Overall, Recitativo and Scherzo-Caprice, Op. 6 is a challenging and expressive piece that showcases the technical and musical abilities of the violinist. It is a popular choice for competitions and recitals, and has been recorded by many of the world's leading violinists.
