Born on January 1, 1983, in Budapest, Hungary, Szalai grew up in a family of musicians. His father, László Szalai, was a renowned violinist, and his mother, Mária Zs. Szalai, was a pianist. He began performing in public at the age of six and made his debut with the Hungarian State Orchestra at the age of nine.
