Artist Info
Birth:March 11, 1950Period:ContemporaryModernGenre:KeyboardKatia Labèque is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on March 11, 1950, in Bayonne, France, Katia was the younger of the two Labèque sisters, the elder being Marielle Labèque. The sisters were born into a musical family, and their father was a doctor who played the piano as a hobby. Their mother was a music teacher who introduced them to the world of music at a young age. Katia began playing the piano at the age of three, and her sister Marielle followed suit soon after. The sisters were both prodigies, and their talent was evident from a young age. They began performing together as a duo in their early teens and quickly gained recognition for their exceptional talent. In 1968, the sisters won the first prize at the International Piano Competition in Munich, which marked the beginning of their international career. They went on to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Throughout their career, the Labèque sisters have collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras in the world. They have performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic, among others. One of the highlights of Katia's career was her performance of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. The performance was recorded and released on video, and it remains one of the most iconic performances of the piece to this day. In addition to her work as a soloist and chamber musician, Katia has also been involved in several collaborative projects. She has worked with jazz musicians such as Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, and she has collaborated with contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and John Adams. Katia has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1985, she was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of her contribution to the arts. In 2008, she was awarded the Victoire de la Musique Classique for her recording of Ravel's "Concerto for the Left Hand." Katia Labèque continues to perform and record to this day, and she remains one of the most respected and admired classical musicians in the world. Her exceptional talent, dedication, and passion for music have made her a true icon of the classical music world.More....
