She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a composer and conductor. Güher and her twin sister, Süher, began playing the piano at the age of three and gave their first public performance at the age of six. The Pekinel sisters were recognized as child prodigies and were invited to perform in various concerts and festivals across Europe. They received their formal education at the Paris Conservatory, where they studied under the tutelage of Pierre Sancan and Jacques Fevrier. In 1974, Güher and Süher Pekinel won the first prize at the Munich International Music Competition, which marked the beginning of their international career. They went on to perform in major concert halls across the world, including the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Güher Pekinel has collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also worked with renowned conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, and Lorin Maazel. In addition to her performances as a soloist and a chamber musician, Güher Pekinel has also recorded extensively. She has recorded the complete works of Mozart for two pianos with her sister, Süher, and has also recorded works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert. Güher Pekinel has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1991, she was awarded the State Artist title by the Turkish government, and in 1997, she was awarded the Order of Merit by the German government. She has also been awarded the Medal of Honor by the French government and the Medal of Culture by the Japanese government. In addition to her musical career, Güher Pekinel is also actively involved in philanthropic work. She is the founder of the Pekinel Music Foundation, which aims to support young musicians in Turkey.
