AustriaBirth:May 16, 1930 in Vienna, AustriaDeath:January 27, 2000 in Vienna, AustriaGenre:KeyboardFriedrich Gulda was a renowned Austrian pianist and composer who was born on May 16, 1930, in Vienna, Austria. He was the son of a teacher and a pianist, and his musical talent was evident from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of four and gave his first public performance at the age of six. Gulda's early musical education was at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano with Bruno Seidlhofer and composition with Joseph Marx. He was a prodigious talent and won several awards and prizes during his time at the academy. In 1946, at the age of 16, he made his debut as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Gulda's career as a pianist took off in the 1950s, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative pianists of his generation. He was known for his virtuosity, his improvisational skills, and his willingness to experiment with different styles of music. He was equally at home playing classical music, jazz, and even rock and roll. One of the highlights of Gulda's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1957. The performance was a huge success, and Gulda's interpretation of the concerto was praised for its clarity, precision, and emotional depth. Gulda's reputation as a pianist continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and he became known for his collaborations with other musicians, including jazz musicians such as Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. He also began to focus more on his own compositions, which were often influenced by jazz and other popular music styles. In 1986, Gulda caused a stir in the classical music world when he announced that he was retiring from performing classical music and would focus exclusively on jazz. He formed a jazz trio and began touring extensively, playing in clubs and festivals around the world. Despite his focus on jazz, Gulda continued to be recognized for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1988, and in 1999 he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. Gulda's career was cut short when he died of a heart attack on January 27, 2000, at the age of 69. He left behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and versatile musicians of his time, and his influence can still be heard in the work of many contemporary pianists and composers.More....
